What is Interchange Number Plate?

An interchange number plate is the process of transferring a vehicle registration number from an existing vehicle (original) to another vehicle (new or temporary) while assigning a new number to the original vehicle if needed. This is commonly done for aesthetic, sentimental, or investment reasons, such as retaining a special or unique number plate when changing vehicles.
To perform an interchange through JPJ, the following conditions must be met:
Eligibility & Requirements
Both vehicles must belong to the same owner or authorized representative
New vehicle must be unregistered
Original vehicle must not be blacklisted by JPJ / PDRM
Only the original vehicle requires PUSPAKOM inspection (except imported vehicles)
Insurance for the new vehicle can be activated after the transfer is completed
Documents Needed
2 copies of Borang Senarai Semak eDaftar
2 copies of Borang JPJ K1  (printed from eDaftar)
Applicant’s identification documents (based on applicant type)
PUSPAKOM B2 inspection report (for original vehicle / imported or special cases)
SIRIM certificate (for green diesel vehicles, if applicable)
Customs K1 form and import permit (for imported vehicles)
2 copies of Borang JPJ K1E and JPJ K1A

Reasons for Interchange

Your number plate is more than just a registration — it’s a valuable asset. With JPJ interchange, you can retain your special or premium number even when selling your vehicle, ensuring it stays with you for your next car instead of being lost.

Whether for personal value, investment potential, or transferring to a family member, interchange gives you full control over your plate. With the proper process, documentation, and inspections, everything can be completed smoothly — especially with the right support.

Step-by-Step Car Plate Interchange Process

Step 1 : PUSPAKOM Inspection

Schedule an appointment via the MyPUSPAKOM app and ensure the original vehicle passes inspection (lights, tires, tint, etc.)

Step 2 : JPJ Application

Bring the approved B2 report, Borang JPJ K1, and all required documents to JPJ. The number plate transfer is usually completed on the same day

Step 3 : Plate Installation

After JPJ approval, install the number plate on the new vehicle. The original vehicle will be issued a temporary or replacement plate if needed.

Step 4 : Insurance Update

Activate or update insurance for the new vehicle after the transfer is completed
